Chapter Six

Have I thought about becoming a foster parent, he asks? Only every day or so. More than that, lately.

With a paper cup of sinfully dark Italian roast in hand—black, two sugars—showered, dressed, and rested, Declan stood off and to the left of the viewing window in St. Hawk’s nursery, deliberately minding his own business. Or that had been the idea.

Funny how life tended to change the best-laid plans.

A week after her arrival, their foundling’s bassinet did not take center stage. Understandable, he supposed. As he understood it—via second-hand information—she’d needed a few hours with a bilirubin lamp, and they’d run as many tests as her little body would tolerate. Hard to do that while keeping her on display, and for who?

Declan tilted his head as he watched her. Someone had wrapped her in a pink and purple blanket that looked as soft as a kiss and was the size of a spiderweb, and planted a knitted hat the size of a teacup on her head. God. That was full term? She’d barely had any weight to her, when he’d held her. And to have all that hair, a lock of it stubbornly sliding out from beneath the brim of that hat. As far as he could tell she’d fallen asleep while chewing her fist.

They’d told him he could hold her. He wanted to. Thing was, if he let himself do that, he wasn’t any too sure he’d be able to let go.

Only a few days ago he’d have kept his distance. Done the smart thing.

The best-laid plans, indeed.

Declan blew out a breath and shook his head, grateful when movement to the right caught his eye. As small as St. Hawk’s was with regard to patient capacity, they did have a respectable handful of new parents who swore by the pair of comforting, comfortable middle-aged midwives on staff. Aside from a few athletic mothers to be, Declan didn’t get involved much in that end of the business. He didn’t recognize any of the new fathers or partners crowded around the glass, but the looks of shell-shocked awe made his mouth change its shape into a small smile.

One thing about being quiet—it made people-watching all kinds of interesting, when they forgot you were there.

Two men took front and center. Must have been a bumper crop last night, Declan thought as he nursed his coffee. One of them looked almost too young to be a father, but there was no mistaking that particular expression on a man’s face. One part awed, one part terrified, one part ‘just got slapped in the face with a mackerel’. His hair stood out at crazy angles, as if he’d had something sticky on his fingers when he’d run his hands through the tangled mess.

Another, a calmer sort of guy—probably his second or third time around the block—chuckled at the gobsmacked young man. “Your first?”

Odd Hair Day covered his mouth when he laughed. “Is it that obvious?”

Calm and Cool thumped his shoulder companionably. “Little bit. Which one is yours? See right there, straight ahead, that’s my newest boy.
